Jonas Cuaron, who co-wrote "Gravity" with his father Alfonso Cuaron has created a short film as a spin-off of the top grossing film. The seven minute short reveals what happened on the other of Sandra Bullock's distress call. The film, titled "Aningaaq" was actually financed by Warner Home Video: it was originally intended as a special feature on "Gravity's" Blu-ray edition. However, the film has become so popular that it's been shown at film festivals and is even being submitted for Oscar consideration.

"Gravity" featured a poignant scene in which Sandra Bullock's distress call from the Russian space capsule is met with a fractured conversation in a foreign language with a dog barking and a baby crying. This short segment becomes the focus of Cuaron's short: the film follows an Inuit fisherman on a remote part of Greenland. Jonas was purportedly inspired by a trip he took to the vast arctic lands and upon encountering the deep attachment to their sled dogs. The film was shot on a minimal budget.

If this film does get nominated, it could make Oscar history. This would be the first time a spin-off short film and its main feature were nominated in the same year. It would also be two films nominated for one conversation. Finally a father and son director have never won in the same year! You can watch the film here.
