Mexican director Luis Mandoki and Diego Luna paid tribute to mothers all over the world with a gut wrenching campaign that asks “what would you think if I told you all mothers lie?”
The two-minute video shows Luna narrating the different scenarios where moms lie, evidently because of their unconditional love to their children. In addition, the video shows an extremely moving scene where the actor says, “Moms lie when they say they’ll be with you all your life,” while seemingly looking at a picture of his late mom.
The video and its concept represent something extremely close to home for both the actor and the director, as Luna lost his mom at only two years old, and Mandoki just two years ago.
“The idea of making a piece that’s longer than a commercial is that it’s not about selling you something, but about celebrating our mothers; talking about them and thinking about them; I really liked that,” the actor said at the presentation press conference. “Also, the team was made up of people I love and admire.”
“Your Mom Lies” will be aired in Mexican TV during the entire month of May, and has gathered thousands of views, shares, likes and reportedly, gallons of tears.
Last March, Luna talked about directing "Mr. Pig" during the Sundance Film Festival, where he shared his fears about filmmaking and the joy that sharing his art with an audience brings.
The actor also pointed out that he thinks, because he lost his mother at such a young age, his daddy issues make it into all his movies. “It's very clear to me now that I have daddy issues and luckily, that’s what my work is about –to reflect and to question yourself, to look inward,” Luna said. “That’s what cinema is about, at least the cinema that I like.”
Luna will be appearing in the next standalone installment of “Star Wars” which comes out next December.
