Globo network in Brazil premiered their brand new primetime telenovela called "Babilônia." We were just tuning in because this new soap marked the return of Adriana Esteves to the small screen after being Carmina on "Avenida Brasil," but what we got instead was something that shocked everyone. In Brazil, telenovelas is what reigns, just like all of our Latin countries, it is the genre of choice and the one that brings in the highest ratings. Brazilian dramas are daring and offer storylines and dialogue that are much closer to reality. It has been custom to have same-sex couples on their primetime productions as they incorporate diversity into their stories. Just a year ago the first kiss on television between two men during the finale of "Amor á Vida."
A year later a lot has changed. Viewers tuning in to the premiere saw a kiss between two older women and sent social media into a tailspin. Legendary actresses Fernanda Montenegro and Nathália Timberg were the ones that starred in this scene that shocked the South American nation. Gilberto Braga, author of this telenovela, weighed in on the matter: "When I wrote the scene I imagined both of them together, I thought of a peck at first. The idea of an actual kiss came from Fernanda [Montenegro] and we accepted it." It's nice to see that Brazil is not shying away from these types of scenes and integrating real life situationes into fiction. Braga also added that the scene is something that little by little is becoming more common as telenovelas have that function. Watch the scene down below and tell us what you think!
