Ugandans demanded action from authorities when a video of a child being tortured by a woman went viral. It was later revealed that the woman in the video was 25-year-old Patience Uwimana, and the child was her 5-year-old son Alfred Ssebandeke.
The act of child abuse took place in Bwuuma zone, Kyazanga Trading Centre, Lwengo District. While the incident took place on Feb. 8, the video was posted online on March 10. Following her arrest and expelling from her village, the mother of two has been sentenced to two years in prison. It was also revealed that the woman has previously been convicted for attempted murder.
A sickening video started being circulated on various social media platforms demanding justice for the child involved. In the video, a crying child is seen sprawled on the ground with a woman screaming at him. The video shows the woman using a stick to violently beat the helpless child. Eventually, the woman is seen kicking the child in the chest.
She picked him up multiple times and slammed him on the ground. The abuse continues as the woman stomped on the child's chest and head. For a fleeting moment, the woman can also be seen standing on the small child's body with both her feet.
It is unclear why the person recording the video did nothing to stop the abuse or if they eventually stopped the woman.
Uwimana absconded as soon as the video went viral. On March 11, the AIGP Asan Kasingye shared information related to the incident and assured the people that she would be arrested. His tweet also revealed that the woman had previously served a prison sentence for attempted murder.
Uganda Radio Network reported that the village council decided to expel Uwimana from the village. She would face grave consequences if she returned.
After her arrest, the mother was taken to court on March 24. Prosecutor, Natal Angwadya, asked the court for a deterrent custodial sentence, the Daily Monitor reported.
While pleading guilty to assaulting her child, Uwimana told the court she had acted out of anger. She said that neighbors blamed her son for stealing things and that she had been enraged at the child after he supposedly stole something. Reducing the sentence of five years for assault, the court sentenced the woman to two years in prison for having entered a guilty plea.
