Given the current turmoil in Venezuela, one would think that President Nicolás Maduro would have more important things to deal with than remembering the death of Hugo Chávez. However, it seems that Maduro is hoping to remind people of the fervor once inspired by Chávez for the country's ruling party by embarking on a week of events to commemorate the former leader, who died one year ago on March 5th. The commemorative events begin tomorrow.
Venezuela's president Nicolás Maduro took to Twitter to announce the special plans in Chavez' honor. "Next week we will have National and International events in tribute to Comandante Hugo Chávez a year after he left us," wrote the President via his account @NicolasMaduro. "Comandante every battle we fight with you and for you, to keep hold of our nation, with Love and Loyalty we will keep Triumphant," he continued.
Hugo Chávez passed away on the 5th of March 2013 following a long battle with cancer which took him to Cuba to seek treatment. Following elections riddled with claims of fraud, Nicolás Maduro took his place, taking over Venezuela's leadership into the current turmoil. Protests have been widespread in the capital Caracas since Feb. 12 as high inflation, skyrocketing crime rates and corruption have made the country a difficult place to live.
