The situation and protests in Venezuela have affected many around the world but who would have thought it would affect the most notorious award show, the Oscars. Venezuelan opposition and students who are against Nicolás Maduro’s government have made their protest public on social media, specifically Twitter. By using twitter, they are trying to convince stars that participate in the awards ceremony tonight to mention what is going on in that country.
Using hashtags like #OscarsforVenezuela and #SOSVenezuela, hundreds of people are retweeting and sending them to actors and oscar nominees. Jared Leto and Jim Carrey have actually retweeted some of the messages they have received.
Madonna, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, just to mention a few have spoken about the situation in Venezuela with declarations of peace and against the government. There have been 18 fatalities, and more than 260 injured during these protests. President Maduro criticized international artists and has accused them of manipulating the fans and not understanding the real situation and what is really happening in Venezuela. But not all artists are against the government. Artists like Sean Penn, Danny Glover and Oliver Stone seem to support it. Here is a list of tweets by protesters and members of the opposition sent to nominees and stars involved in the huge event tonight.
