Claire Holt in Vampire Diaries
Claire Holt will bring some action in the upcoming episode of "Vampire Diaries." The CW

The finale of season 4 is fast approaching, and fans are looking forward to several plotlines finally resolving … or maybe not. But as the new episode, “American Gothic,” shows up in our TV screens on Thursday, viewers might be up for a surprise: Elijah is back.

That is right, the long departed character played by Daniel Gillies will be gracing episode 18 with his presence, but as the actor anticipated, it might not be all pretty. “Elijah’s going to shock and even horrify a few,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “But I think what he is doing is wonderful.”

Word is out that Elijah will be back to try to keep his family together, but in trying so he will cause controversy in Mystic Falls … by making out with Elena.

Crazed Elena, who has been the center of everybody’s worries -- particularly Stefan’s and Damon’s -- is obsessed with finding the cure, which she will try to get from Katherine early in the episode. AFter her refusal, Elena will do what it takes, even if that means kissing Elijah.

On the other hand, Rebekah will go beyond the limits of reasonable when she physically attacks Katherine after hearing that the cure will not resolve “everything that [Rebekah] hates about herself.” The Original sister will crush some bones in Kat’s hand before the Salvatore brothers show up and prevent any further damage.

“Vampire Diaries” will be aired Thursday March 28 on The CW. Watch the preview below:
