The United States fell down a goal early in their international friendly against Peru on Friday, but this time they had the benefit of a healthy Jozy Altidore.
Altidore scored a brace leading the United States to a thrilling comeback over Peru as Team USA defeated Peru 2-1 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.
Altidore returned to the USMNT roster after being sent home during the elimination rounds of the CONCACAF Gold Cup in July. Altidore's triumphant return saw him open the scoring for the U.S. in the 59th minute, when his penalty kick was blocked by Peruvian goalkeeper Pedero Gallese, only to see the rebound bounce right back to Altidore for the easy put back.
Less than ten minutes later, Altidore found himself in the right place at the right time to knock in a Gyasi Zardes shot that deflected right to the striker's feet.
Peru scored first in the 20th minute when Daniel Chavez's shot from the top of the box deflected off defender Omar Gonzalez and over the arms of goalkeeper Brad Guzan.
Peru appeared to be the better team for most of the first half. They dominated possession, shots on goal, and shots on target. Defensively, they denied America the ball in attacking zone.
By the end of the first half, the United States seemed to find their rhythm as they were able to get off a flurry of shot attempts against Peru. Jermaine Jones made his first appearance with the team since earlier this year as he has battled through two different injuries.
Altidore's teammate, Michael Bradley, did not play in the match as he choose to stay home to play for Toronto F.C. over the weekend. Altidore wore the captain's armband in Bradley's stead.
The victory over Peru is a good start for team USA, but next up is Brazil on Sept. 8 as Neymar is expected to return to the pitch for Canarinho's friendly.
