A woman plunged to her death after throwing her 5-year-old son from a bridge following an argument with her husband.

The incident happened Sunday, July 25, on a bridge near Talaghattapura in South Bengaluru, Karnataka, India.

According to the police, the woman, identified as Chandana, a resident of Mallasandra, near Holiday village, had a bachelor’s degree in engineering program (BE).

She was working as a software engineer in Andhra Pradesh before getting married to Chaithanya Kumar on February 25, 2016. The couple shifted to Bengaluru after the wedding.

"My daughter informed us recently that her husband, his parents KV Sivaramaiah and Prasanna Kumari and brother K Vinay Kumar were demanding she bring gold jewelry as dowry and wanted a share in my property," the woman’s father, B.S Vanaprasad stated in his complaint, the Times of India reported.

The victim’s father has filed a case of dowry harassment against his son-in-law. The father alleged that his daughter had recently received a job offer which her husband strongly disapproved of.

"Meanwhile, she got an offer from a software company and her husband did not allow her to take up the job. My daughter committed suicide along with her son because of harassment by Kumar and his family members," Varaprasad alleged in his complaint.

According to the police, following an argument with her husband, Chandana rushed to the bridge which is few meters away from her home. Once there, she threw her son 70ft down the bridge and plunged onto the busy road below.

The child died on the scene, police said. Chandana was rushed to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. She succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead on Monday evening.

Police have registered a case of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide against the victim’s husband and his family.

During interrogation, the suspect told police that he and his family are innocent and claimed they have not demanded dowry from his wife or her family.

The suspect has been detained and the incident is being investigated, police said. Investigators are questioning relatives and neighbors to gain a better insight into the issue.
