Unmarried Pregnant Woman With Learning Disability Murdered By Mother, Sister

An unmarried pregnant woman with a learning disability was strangled to death by her mother and sister.

The deceased victim, identified as 35-year-old Sermakani, was murdered at her home in the Nanguneri village of Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, India on Monday, July 12. The shocking incident came to light when the family of the victim was arranging for her funeral.

The victim’s family claimed that she died of natural causes, however, some villagers suspected foul play and alerted the police.

Officers from the Moolakaraipatti police responded to the home and began an investigation.

During the preliminary investigation, investigators learned that the deceased woman was pregnant.

The family members were interrogated during which the victim’s mother and sister confessed to the killing.

The victim’s mother, identified as 60-year-old Murugammal, and her daughter, identified as Selvi, told the investigators that they murdered the woman because they were upset that she was unmarried and pregnant.

The victim, who was born with a learning disability, was unmarried due to her mental condition. The family had recently found a man who agreed to marry the woman.

However, it was only later that the family members learned that the woman was five months pregnant. As they were not able to identify the man responsible for the pregnancy, the mother-daughter duo decided to end their misery and save their pride by killing the woman.

The body of the deceased woman was sent to the Tirunelveli government medical college and hospital for an autopsy. The exact cause of death will be revealed once the autopsy results are out, police said.

A case of murder has been registered and the accused duo has been arrested. The charges imposed on them are unclear at this time.

In another incident, a 25-year-old pregnant woman was reportedly crushed to death and her two-year-old daughter was decapitated after a truck rammed into their motorcycle on Gandhi Setu in Patna, India on Wednesday, July 7.

The pregnant victim, Babita Devi, was traveling with her husband Rakesh Kumar and their daughter Nandani on a motorcycle when a truck rammed into them. The family was reportedly on their way to deliver food for Kumar's mother who was admitted to a hospital after surgery.

The pregnant woman and child died on the spot. The man suffered critical injuries and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
