The head of finances at the University of Puerto Rico resigned Tuesday after a scammer took $150,000 out of the institution.

President Miguel Muñoz said that Edwin Reyes resigned of his own accord because he felt "very responsible" for the scam, which was done in three checks of $50,000 each to a con man pretending to be Puerto Rico's public affairs secretary Jorge Colberg. The swindler said that the university was to receive $15 million in funds, but first needed to provide the payment for administrative expenses.

Muñoz himself said he never thought of resigning over the incident. So far two people have been arrested in connection with the case.

Puerto Rican media confirmed that a conspiracy has been operating in the island, with several people passing as government officials in speaking with majors and others, with a similar speech to the one delivered to UPR.
