The day some Twitter employees has come with reports that several workers have been laid off, including the entire ethics team of the social media company.
Aside from the layoffs, Twitter has allegedly shut down offices in London as well as other locations.
Twitter employees were reportedly informed via email that the company would inform them by noon on Friday, Nov. 4, about the staff cuts.
"In an effort to place Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce on Friday," an email read obtained by Reuters.
It was one of the feared moves that billionaire Elon Musk was planning to cut costs and at the same time introduce a new plan for the staff. Among those who were affected by the decision of the 51-year-old business magnate came those in the production and content curation, communications and engineering, Apple Insider reported.
At the top of the list of those being laid off are people who were under the Machine Learning, Ethics, Transparency and Accountability (META). The ethical AI team was formed in 2021 with the task of auditing the company’s algorithms and investigating unintended harm and abuses.
Also, employees who would not be laid off would be informed through their work email addresses.
Staff who Twitter had laid off would receive an email to their address with steps on what actions to take next.
Expected to follow after the layoffs were class action lawsuits against Twitter. Some bat that they were not given enough time or notice of their impending firing, per the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) and California WARN Act.
The said act requires companies to give employees at least 60 days of advance notice before a mass firing occurs. The former employees filed the suit in US District Court in San Francisco and named five workers as plaintiffs.
