President Donald Trump lashed out at Canada on Truth Social, accusing the country of using electricity as a "bargaining chip" and threatening severe financial consequences that "will be read about in history books."

The U.S. and Canada have long maintained a close energy relationship, with Canada supplying around 85% of America's imported electricity, particularly to northern states like New York, Michigan, and Minnesota, according to PBS.

However, recent tensions between the two countries have escalated over trade disputes and energy policies, with Ontario Premier Doug Ford threatening to shut off electricity "completely" as part of the ongoing battle.

On Tuesday, Trump took to Truth Social to question why the U.S. depends on Canada for electricity, calling it a "low" move for the Canadian government to use power supplies as a political tool.

"Why would our Country allow another Country to supply us with electricity, even for a small area? Who made these decisions, and why? And can you imagine Canada stooping so low as to use ELECTRICITY, that so affects the life of innocent people, as a bargaining chip and threat," Trump wrote.

He continued, "They will pay a financial price for this so big that it will be read about in History Books for many years to come."

The statement sparked immediate debate online, with some of his supporters calling for energy independence, while critics pointed out that energy imports are part of long-standing economic agreements.
