The comedian who joked that Puerto Rico was a "floating island of garbage" during a Donald Trump rally says he will never apologize because that's what he does and it is "never going to change."
Tony Hinchcliffe's remark at the October 27 Trump rally sparked outrage, particularly among celebrities and Puerto Rican communities, leading to a widespread backlash.
In response to the fallout, Hinchcliffe recorded a podcast episode defending the joke, claiming to love Puerto Ricans, and reiterating that he owes no apology to anyone for his comedy.
"Last night I gave a speech, I don't know if you heard about this," Hinchcliffe said in the podcast. "It was a speech about free speech, believe it or not. I am currently under attack. I am the news."
Despite the criticism, Hinchcliffe doubled down on his refusal to apologize, arguing that he is a comedian who will continue to make the same type of jokes.
"I referenced Puerto Rico, which currently has a landfill problem in which all of their landfills are filled to the brim. I am the only person who knew about this, unfortunately. With that said, I just want to say that I love Puerto Ricans, they're very smart people — they're smart, they're street smart, they're smart enough to know when they're being used as political fodder. Right now that is happening," Hinchcliffe said.
