The Trump administration scrapped Joe Biden's additions to Title IX that protected students against gender and sexual orientation discrimination in schools, reverting to President Trump's 2020 version of the law.
The Department of Education announced the change in a "Dear Colleague" note to K-12 and higher education institutions, according to The Hill.
While Biden's Title IX law included students' gender identity and sexual orientation when prohibiting discrimination, the Trump administration defines "'sex' to mean the objective, immutable characteristic of being born male or female."
"The Biden Administration's failed attempt to rewrite Title IX was an unlawful abuse of regulatory power and an egregious slight to women and girls," Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Craig Trainor told The Hill. "Under the Trump Administration, the Education Department will champion equal opportunity for all Americans, including women and girls, by protecting their right to safe and separate facilities and activities in schools, colleges, and universities."
