A truck driver reportedly killed himself after the company he was working for did not pay him his salary for several months in Sanjeevni Nagar, Bengaluru, India on Wednesday, March 30.
On Wednesday, Kiran Kumar, 35, who worked as a truck driver for Tirumala Logistics Services, recorded a video on his phone claiming that the company owed him US$394 (30,000 Indian Rupees) in back wages.
In the filmed ultimatum, Kumar asserted that he wants the money to be deposited into his bank account within 30 minutes from the time the video message is sent out, or else he'd take his own life. He then proceeded to send out the video via WhatsApp to a few of his friends identified only as Manu, Shivanna, and Manjanna. The three reportedly failed to respond to the message on time since it was sent late at night, Hindustan Times reported.
Later that morning, the trio tried to reach out to the truck driver. Even though they made multiple attempts to contact Kumar, their calls went unanswered.
At around 9:30 p.m. later that day, Kumar, who was reportedly upset over the lack of response and the fact that he didn’t get the money, decided to end his life. He went to his uncle's residence located in Sanjeevini Nagar, West Bengaluru, and allegedly killed himself by hanging a noose from the ceiling, Deccan Herald reported.
Following Kumar's death, the Govindaraja Nagar police registered a case of abetment to suicide under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 306 against Manjanna, Shivanna, and Manu.
Kumar, who hailed from Tumakuru, was reportedly unmarried and lived in Bengaluru with his uncle.
“We will investigate whether the logistics company owed him any wages or he himself had taken a salary advance,” a police officer said adding that an investigation into the incident is underway.
