A three-month-old baby girl was abducted and murdered by two persons including a transgender after the infant’s family refused to give money to the latter suspect over the birth of the child.

The infant was kidnapped from her house in Ambedkar Nagar in the Cuffe Parade of South Mumbai, during the wee hours on Friday, July 9.

"She was sleeping along with her parents when allegedly kidnapped and killed," the New Indian Express quoted a police officer as saying.

The girl’s mother woke up at around 2 am and found the baby girl missing. She immediately informed her husband and also alerted her in-laws.

The family began searching for the child but their efforts were in vain. The family members then approached the Cuffe Parade police station and registered a case of kidnapping.

The child’s grandfather, Chandrakant told the news outlet that they know who was behind the kidnapping.

"We have named the transgender, identified as Kanu, as the prime suspect as she had come to our house on Thursday evening and demanded Rs 2000 as a baby girl was born in our house," said Chandrakant.

In India, transgenders are considered as the female avatar of God Vishnu—Mohini, and it is a custom to offer them money when a child is born in the family.

"We did not give Kanu any money and asked her to come on the day of her naming ceremony. The transgender then threatened and left," the grandfather said.

However, soon after a case was registered, the accused transgender, Kanu surrendered at the police station.

"Kanu allegedly told police that the allegations placed by her family were baseless. But during the course of the investigation, has confessed to the crime and named an accomplice who helped in killing," said an officer, the local news outlet reported.

Kanu’s accomplice, identified as Sonu, was also arrested.

The accused duo took the police officers to the spot where they had buried the infant’s body.

The baby girl’s body was recovered from a marshy land along the Arabian Sea and was sent to JJ hospital for an autopsy.

"The post mortem report will help us ascertain whether she was assaulted before the murder," the police official said.
