A four-year-old girl died after she was run over by a speeding police vehicle. The child was crossing the road with her mother when the accident occurred.
The incident happened near Gopal Nagar Chowk in Ludhiana, India on Thursday, July 8.
The child, who has not been publicly identified, remained stuck in the middle of the road while her mother reached the other side of the road.
The police car which was being driven by Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Jaspal Singh deputed at Tibba police station, ran over the child.
The officer rushed the child to Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) with life-threatening injuries. She was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
After the accident, the child’s kin and some other locals staged a protest for over two hours, demanding action against the officer in question. Senior police officials rushed to the scene to pacify the protesters and assured them to take strict action against the ASI.
The father of the deceased toddler, identified as Devika, alleged that the police had taken the child’s body to the civil hospital for an autopsy but were refusing to hand over the body to the family.
The officials were asked to record the statement of the victim’s parents. A case has been registered against ASI and an investigation is underway, Assistant commissioner of police (ACP, East) Davinder Chaudhary said.
In a similar but unrelated incident, a mother and daughter were injured after an off-duty policewoman who was reportedly driving under the influence of alcohol crashed into their vehicle.
On June 5, Dana Schaub and her 26-year old daughter Sarah were on their way to pick up a late-night pizza when the policewoman's pickup crashed into their vehicle.
The policewoman was identified as 50-year-old Tangie Beaton of League City. Beaton was an off-duty police sergeant with the Lakeview Police Department.
"We are both in a lot of pain, both having to go to the ER twice for this, and we are under a doctor’s care right now," Schaub told the NBC-affiliated KPRC-TV.
"To think that someone who took an oath to protect us from people like that could actually do that, it was just hard to accept," said Schaub.
Schaub's vehicle which she used to deliver food was totaled in the crash. Her attorney said that not only was his client and her daughter injured, but Schaub has also lost her only source of income.
"We are preparing this case for litigation, and obviously, we are investigating and we are in the process of obtaining information and investigating the claim further as we prepare to file suit," Schaub’s attorney Barney Dill said.
