I hope you all are doing your vocal warm-ups and stretching appropriately because this is going to be one big singing-acting-dancing party!
They're finally here, the nominations for the Tony Awards, Broadway's recognition to the cast and crew in charge of keeping the "Great White Way" entertaining for both natives, tourists, and adoptive children of New York.
This year, girls are going to have a lot of fun since the Cyndi Lauper scored musical Kinky Boots leads the nominations with 13, including one for Lauper's music and lyrics. When The New York Times called her, she said 13 is her lucky number and her brother was born Mar. 13, so she thinks they're going to be good. "I've won awards before, but you never assume you will. I take work a day at a time. I'd been doing all these punishing concert tours when I was asked to do 'Kinky.' You know, my whole life I've been chasing work around the whole world, but I never would have imagined that I only had to look in my own backyard to find something like this" said the singer/songwriter.
Matilda, created in England and based on a Roald Dahl children's novel, took second place with nominations (12), but is one of the favorites to win "Best Musical". This Royal Shakespeare Company production, winner of a record seven Olivier Awards (London's version of the Tony's) is one of the season's box office hits with fans from Europe that want to see the American version, or children-at-heart adults who remember the book and feel tempted to revive their experience, or maybe 20-year-olds who are very fond of the movie and that epic "chocolate cake" scene and want to see how they deliver it on stage, and also, a lot of Tim Minchin fans, who wrote the music and lyrics.
Even though the four girls who rotate in the part of Matilda were not eligible to be nominated, they're all receiving a special Tony honors for their work. Talk about cuteness!
