According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the new Tesla D will debut Thursday night, Oct. 9. There are speculations abound as the industry is excitedly awaiting for the official press conference scheduled for 7 p.m. PDT at Hawthorne, California. However, new details regarding the mysterious Tesla D has already surfaced via a back-end source code within the official Tesla website. Here's what we know so far:
First things first, speculations and rumors have already suggested that the upcoming Tesla D will be an all-new performance offering that will boast supercar-like power figures. In fact, earlier on Thursday, Daily Mail suggested the new Tesla D could achieve 0-60 mph acceleration at the sub-3-second level In fact, Daily Mail compared the performance of the new Tesla D to rival offerings from Lamborghini or Bugatti. However, is Tesla seriously prepared to unleash a quarter-million dollar supercar?
In order to accurately predict what the Tesla D is, we believe it is crucial to first understand the meaning behind the "D" moniker. According to leaked JavaScript files we obtained from IBTimes, Tesla is apparently working on a new technology internally called the "Dual Drive Motor." Could this be the meaning behind Tesla D?
As far as we know, Tesla is working hard to deliver the new Tesla Model X crossover to the market by Spring 2015. The Tesla Model X was intended to be Tesla's first all wheel drive offering. However, it looks like Tesla could be introducing a dual drive all wheel drive system, two motors to drive the front and rear wheels, in a range-topping Tesla Model S first.
Time will tell whether or educated guess is accurate or not. Stay tuned as we will continue to cover the highly anticipated Tesla D later this evening.
