To date "Tequila Sisters" is one of TV's strongest contenders to capture the same magic "Keeping up with the Kardashian's" had. "Tequila Sisters" is built on select slices from the everyday lives of four beautiful Hispanic-American daughters, ages 21-28, of Tequila entrepreneur Bill Marin. The show follows the antics of these four silly spoiled daddy's girls. The catch however, is that in return for Marin's indulgence he keeps a tight rein on the household and his girls. The sisters must check in when they are not home and their suitors must be approved. They also have curfews!
The premiere finds the oldest sister, Jen, has moved out of the family home which violates Marin's social code. And she is asking for $40,000 to throw herself an extravagant birthday party but when daddy objects she goes to her wealthy boyfriend. The girls then have a family meeting in the hot tub of all places to discuss the issues at hand. While that's the gist of the episode the rest contains footage to upcoming issues of the season and spoiler alert; it's just as shallow.
Although you can see the cultural clashes between immigrant parents and Americanized children and the struggle to hold onto cultural values while trying to assimilate to American ways "Tequila Sisters" is just too shallow to examine those issues. As shown when Jen argues with Bill about the $40,000 for her 28th birthday party. However, this shallow-ness works with reality shows and what's expected when you watch a reality show based on rich young women. Perhaps future episodes will shed more light on these women's goals and aspirations and maybe even delve into the issue of Latino American's assimilating to the US culture, but then again the previews don't give us much hope.
