In a significant shift within Spanish-language television, 'Noticias Telemundo,' anchored by Julio Vaqueiro, has made history by surpassing 'Noticiero Univision' in ratings among adults aged 18 to 49.

This marks the first time Telemundo has outperformed its main competitor in this key demographic over an entire week. Notably, the achievement coincides with the departure of Mexican anchor Jorge Ramos, a pillar of Spanish-language journalism, from Univision after nearly four decades.

Telemundo's surge in ratings

During the week of January 13, 2025, 'Noticias Telemundo' averaged around 397,000 viewers in the 18-49 age group, beating 'Noticiero Univision' by a 14% margin.

This milestone occurred during a critical news cycle, including the Los Angeles wildfires and the lead-up to Donald Trump's second presidential term.

Telemundo has attributed this to strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing its news programming and attracting a younger audience. According to the network, their efforts to modernize content and leverage digital platforms have been pivotal.

Julio Vaqueiro's leadership

Under Vaqueiro's direction, 'Noticias Telemundo' has adopted a dynamic and contemporary approach to news delivery. "Vaqueiro's leadership is marked by a commitment to in-depth reporting and a clear understanding of issues affecting the Hispanic community," Telemundo stated.

"His efforts have reshaped the program's content, successfully engaging younger viewers and expanding its audience," the network added.

It isn't a surprise that Telemundo's robust presence on social media and streaming platforms has also played a crucial role in their surge in popularity. This approach has allowed the network to reach tech-savvy viewers and foster greater audience interaction.

The ratings victory for Telemundo also comes at a time of instability for Univision.

Jorge Ramos' departure from Univision

Jorge Ramos, the most recognized name in Spanish-language journalism in the U.S., announced his departure from Univision in September 2024. In December he ended a 38-year career as co-anchor of 'Noticiero Univision,' marking the end of an era for the network.

Known for his incisive interviews and journalistic integrity, Ramos was a cornerstone of Univision's credibility. His confrontations with political figures, including a notable exchange with Donald Trump, underscored his dedication to holding power accountable.

His departure has left a significant void, sparking debates about Univision's ability to maintain its leadership in the Spanish-language news landscape.

Risking credibility and viewer loyalty

Univision's evening newscast is now anchored by Colombian journalist Ilia Calderón. Adding to Univision's challenges are allegations of aligning with Trump. Comments from Univision's president, Daniel Alegre, suggesting the network played a role in helping Trump secure his second term, have fueled skepticism among viewers.

The backlash was compounded by previous accusations of a favorable interview with Trump and subsequent layoffs of beloved journalists and staff, which have further eroded trust from audiences.
