A female Chinese student was reported killed on Friday, Feb. 11, inside a Utah hotel following a reported domestic incident where her supposed boyfriend claimed that they had a failed suicide pact together.
The 19-year-old student, who has been left unnamed by the authorities to protect her identity, was found dead in a Quality Inn room in Utah after her boyfriend, a 26-year-old fellow Chinese international student, called a university employee and told them about the death, The Daily Beast reported.
The woman found in the hotel room reportedly overdosed on heroin that the 26-year-old man, who was identified as Haoyu Wang, bought off the Dark Web and administered to the woman before injecting himself as well in a joint-suicide attempt, according to the New York Post.
Wang has not been charged for the incident, but authorities are currently investigating the case as a “domestic violence-related homicide”.
The University of Utah, where both students were enrolled and attending classes, has offered a statement grieving the death of the student and offering the services of counselors to individual students who have been in domestic violence situations, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.
“The death of any young person embarking on adult life is devastating. On behalf of the university, we extend our heartfelt grief and sympathy to the family, friends and classmates of the victim during this incredibly difficult time,” a statement from the university said.
This incident is the second time that a Chinese student has been killed since 2017, and is also the eighth high-profile death to happen on the campus since 2016, four of which have been related to cases of domestic violence.
A Chinese computer science student, Chen Wei Guo, was killed in October 2017 during a carjacking incident where 24-year-old Austin Boutain shot at his car five times, hitting and killing Chen. Boutain was sentenced to life in prison for the murder.
