Teen Girl Murdered For Falling In Love With Boy From Different Religion

A 16-year-old girl was allegedly murdered by her mother and her lover for falling in love with a man from a different religion.

The shocking case of honor killing happened in Huggelli, a village in the Indian state of Telangana, and came to light on Wednesday, Feb. 16, when the girl’s mother and her paramour were arrested for the teen’s murder.

The eleventh-grader was reportedly found dead in an agriculture field in Zaheerabad on Monday morning.

A preliminary investigation had revealed that the girl was strangulated to death, indicated by the ligature marks around her neck, investigators told local sources.

Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s brother the police registered a complaint and began questioning the victim’s family and friends.

During interrogation officers learned about the girl’s relationship with a boy in her village. The teen suspect was identified and taken into police custody for detailed questioning, reports said.

The investigators were convinced that the boy was not at the scene of crime on Sunday night. The officers, however, obtained a lead into the investigation after the boy raised suspicions regarding the girl’s family.

He told police that the girl's mother was against their relationship and stated that her own family might have killed her.

The mother was questioned, although she initially denied her involvement in the crime, after a detailed grilling she confessed to the murder, police said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) G Shankar Raj said the girl was in love with a boy belonging to another community and her mother had made multiple attempts to dissuade the girl but she kept meeting her boyfriend.

The mother got infuriated and decided to kill her daughter with the help of her paramour, the officer added.

“In the past, the girl’s mother, a widow, had asked her to stay away from her boyfriend who works in a mutton shop as he was from a different religion. But when they continued to meet, about a month ago the mother told her paramour that she felt humiliated. They then decided to kill the girl,” the DSP told the Times of India.

In the wee hours on Sunday, Feb. 13, the mother took her daughterl to the outskirts of the village, where her paramour joined her.

The man strangulated the girl with a scarf while her mother pinned the girl down by sitting on her.

After they confirmed the girl had died, the duo left the body at the crime scene and fled to their respective homes, reports said.

The mother was arrested for murder and her paramour was arrested on the charge of murder as well as violation of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. They were sent to judicial remand on Wednesday night.
