A 17-year-old girl reportedly took her own life by jumping in front of a train, allegedly spurred to take the drastic step because of academic pressure, as she felt she was not adequately prepared for an upcoming exam. The incident took place near Chauma railway crossing, Haryana, India on Friday, Dec. 17 night.
On Dec. 17, the teen, a Class 12 student in a public school in Kartarpuri, had reportedly borrowed a book from her classmate for her economics exam that was scheduled the next day, Dec. 18. While heading to her friend's house, however, it seemingly dawned on the student that she wasn't prepared for the exam and decided to kill herself by jumping in front of a train, the New Indian Express reported.
The station master was subsequently notified about the incident at around 8:30 p.m. late Friday. Following the report, GRP personnel reached the area and found the girl's body near the railway track, discovering the teen with serious injuries on her head and legs.
Law enforcement reportedly later recovered a suicide note the girl had written in her possession. In her letter, the student stated that she no longer had enough time to prepare for the exam so she had decided to kill herself. The victim's father, however, rebuffed reports of suicide, insisting that his daughter was accidentally hit by a train, the Tribune reported.
"My daughter was also a good football player. She died after being accidentally hit by a train when she was returning from her friend's home," the girl's father said.
In a similar but unrelated incident, a 19-year-old medical aspirant from Salem, India reportedly killed himself hours before taking the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) examination on Sept. 12, because he was scared that he would not pass the test, the Times Of India reported.
The deceased, identified as S. Dhanush, 19, had reportedly taken the NEET twice before, but previously did not succeed in securing a medical admission. He had applied for the NEET exam for the third time and was assigned to an exam center in an engineering college in Mecheri.
However, as the test's schedule grew near, he was reportedly left anxious and feared flunking the examination once again.
According to Nishant, Dhanush's brother, the deceased had been preparing for the exam for the past few months. He added that his sibling was scared about the test and spiraled into a slump days before the exam. Despite getting his entire family's encouragement leading up to the NEET, Dhanush allegedly killed himself in the early hours of Sept. 12.
