A 16-year-old boy accidentally hanged himself to death in front of his friends while enacting a suicide stunt to gain followers on Instagram.
The deceased teen, a resident of Indore in Madhya Pradesh, India was reportedly attempting to shoot a fake hanging sequence for Instagram reels when the tragedy unfolded on Monday, Dec. 13.
The boy’s parents were at a wedding in Ratlam district during the time of the accident, but he had invited his friends to be his audience.
The teen stood on a stool, tied a rope to the ceiling fan in his bedroom, and fashioned a noose around his neck, police said.
His friends were capturing the act on a cell phone when the boy accidentally slipped from the stool and began choking. The horrified witnesses ran away while their friend strangled himself to death.
The incident came to light when the teen boy’s elder brother returned home from tuition and found him hanging in the room. He alerted the neighbors and the teen was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.
The police have registered a case of unnatural death and were inspecting the boy’s phone to gain a better insight into the matter.
"We have found many videos he had uploaded on social media. Probably, this was also a video he wanted to upload but he accidentally slipped and hanged himself," Sub-Inspector Kishore Kumar told the Times of India.
After an autopsy, the boy’s remains were handed over to his family for performing his last rites. The death is being investigated, the police official added.
A similar incident was reported from Pakistan on May 19, when a 19-year-old boy died after his gun went off as he pretended to shoot himself while filming a Tik Tok video.
The teen, identified as Hamidullah, a resident of the Qalagay area of Kabal Tehsil in Swat District was killed when he held a friend's pistol to his head and pulled the trigger, not knowing the gun was loaded.
"He planned to film a suicide video and arranged a pistol. Unaware of bullets in the pistol, he went to a nearby mountain with his friends where they started filming the video," an eye witness said.
The teen was "filming a video showing a suicide scene for sharing with his followers on his account when the pistol went off," said Hazrat Badshah, Deputy Superintendent of Police in Kabal.
