A 40-year-old school teacher allegedly shot himself dead in the Varanasi district of Uttar Pradesh, India, after handing a 6-page suicide note to his wife.
The deceased, Amit Pathak, a resident of Khalil Sharki in Shahjahanpur, shot himself with his licensed pistol while inside his car on Sunday, Dec. 12.
According to local media reports, Pathak gave up his business career four years ago after suffering huge losses. He then joined as a teacher at a school in the city.
On Sunday morning, Pathak left home after handing over a ‘suicide note’ to his wife, Vandhana.
She tried to stop him but he reportedly ignored her pleas and drove away in his car. She immediately alerted the police and an investigation was launched to locate Pathak.
Meanwhile, Pathak reached his father-in-law's house and handed over another 'suicide note' to the man, and rushed back towards his vehicle saying he is going to kill himself.
When Pathak’s brother-in-law, Satya Prakash Pandey tried to stop him, he reportedly pointed a gun at them, warning them to leave him alone.
However, both Pandey and his father pursued Pathak in their car but lost his trail after a while.
Later in the day, police received an alert from some locals about a body in a car.
Officers were dispatched to a playground in the Kashipuram colony where they found Pathak in the driving seat of his vehicle with a bullet wound in his temple. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
During questioning, Pathak’s family told police that he had been dealing with depression for a while.
The police have registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating the incident, according to local media reports.
In a similar but unrelated incident, a major in the Indian Army reportedly shot himself dead with his AK-47 rifle on Saturday, Dec. 11.
The Indian army’s Rashtriya Rifles Major, Parvinder Singh from Priyadarshini Vihar in eastern Delhi was found dead at his camp quarters in Banihal town of Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district on Saturday night.
The 29-year-old Army officer was the company commander of 23 RR’s Ramban detachment, Alpha Coy Mahubal.
The motive behind his decision to take such an extreme step is unclear at this time, a police official said.
The police have registered a case under Section 174 ( inquest on unnatural death) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) and further probe is underway.
