Not the result that Syracuse University was expecting on their debut game of the season with Orange legends Dave Bing and Carmelo Anthony in the crowd. Scoring only 34 points in a 14-point loss to Virginia, Syracuse just witnessed their lowest scoring output in 74 years per reports by The Daily Orange.
Elijah Hughes led the Orange with 14 points but took 14 shots to get the output, including 10 tries from the three-point area. His team shot 13 out of 55 shots the entire game for an atrocious 23.6% while only going to the line seven times, converting three.
Failing to put their team’s performance in words, the team went to Twitter to have their followers rate their performance.
The not-so-uplifting responses came in as expected.
TMZ Sports posted a video of Carmelo Anthony giving the team a pep-talk before the start of the game in hopes of pumping the team up and start ACC Tournament season on the right note. The NBA veteran shared that not even coach Jim Boeheim is aware that he is going to show up in the dug-out before telling the players that he wanted to be there for them.
"I just want to let ya'll know how important this is for me to be here on your guys opening night,” started Melo said at the start of his talk. “Nobody gonna give ya'll a shot. Everybody gonna count ya'll out. But as long as you got each other right here, this is what matters," he added.
Two players from Virginia scored in double figures. Mamadi Diakite top-scored for the Cavaliers with 12 points, six rebounds, two blocks, an assist and a steal while sophomore Kihei Clark had a double-double of 11 boards and 10 points, together with seven assists and a steal.
