Suzy Favor Hamilton, a three-time U.S. Olympian runner, has admitted to leading a double life over the last year as a $600-an-hour call girl in Las Vegas, a decision that she calls a "huge mistake," the Smoking Gun first reported.

Beginning last December, 44-year-old started working with one of the premier escort services in Las Vegas, booking scores of "dates" up and down the strip and in other U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston.

While Hamilton hid her secret second job by using an alias, "Kelly Lundy," she reportedly shared her real identity with several male clients.

The Olympian came clean after initially denying her moonlighting career to a Smoking Gun reporter in the lobby of a posh Las Vegas hotel who approached her.

"I take full responsibility for my mistakes. I'm not the victim and I'm not going that route," Hamilton said. "I'm owning up to what I did. I would not blame anybody except myself." She added, "Everybody in this world makes mistakes. I made a huge mistake. Huge."

According to the Smoking Gun, Hamilton described the escort business as "exciting." She said she thought of the work as a diversion from her normal routine life. Hamilton said that her husband Mark was aware of her escort work, but that, "He tried, he tried to get me to stop. He wasn't supportive of this at all."

As the Smoking Gun notes, Hamilton's motive for taking the job doesn't look to be out of financial need. She operates a successful Madison, WI real estate brokerage firm with her husband and delivers motivational speeches. The couple also lives in a $600,000 home in Madison, and their court and municipal records show no sign of apparent financial distress.

Taking to her Twitter account Thursday, Hamilton assumed full responsibility for herself.

"I cannot emphasize enough how sorry I am to anyone I have hurt as a result of my actions and greatly appreciate the support from family and those closest to me," she wrote.

"I fully intend to make amends and get back to being a good mother, wife, daughter, and friend."

She went on to attempt to explain her reasoning for getting into the world of escorts.

"I was drawn to escorting in large part because it provided many coping mechanisms for me when I was going through a very challenging ... Time with my marriage and my life. It provided an escape from a life that I was struggling in. It was a double life."

Hamilton also added that she is currently seeking help:

"I do not expect people to understand, but the reasons for doing this made sense to me at the time and were very much related to depression. I have been seeking the help of a psychologist for the past few weeks and will continue to do so after I have put things together," she wrote.

Hamilton ran in the 1992, 1996 and 2000 Olympics, however failed to medal in each of those appearances. She has won nine NCAA running titles.
