Will Smith is officially out of “Suicide Squad 2” as Deadshot, and DCEU executives are now in talks whether to recast the role or replace Floyd Lawton, a.k.a. Deadshot, with a different character from the DC Universe.
If the studio decides to omit Deadshot in the sequel, Smith could still reprise his role in “Suicide Squad 3” or in Matt Reeves’ future “Batman” movies. But if the studio decides to recast the role, that might mean that Smith is officially out of the game, just as how Ben Affleck hung up his Batman cape and moved on after playing the Caped Crusader in several DC films.
Since Deadshot is a major figure in “Suicide Squad,” some fans point out that in order to maintain the connectivity, it is better to bring in a new actor to play the role than get rid of Deadshot completely. With the recasting of the deadly assassin possibly on the table, here is a list of actors who may fill Smith’s shoes as Deadshot.
1. Hugh Dancy
Hugh Dancy was close to nabbing the role of Batman when Christopher Nolan was still gearing up for the trilogy. Best known for his role as the criminal profiler Will Graham in the NBC series “Hannibal,” he seems to make the grade for an assassin like Deadshot.
2. Ralph Fiennes
Even before he got to play Voldemort, Fiennes was considered for Lex Luthor in the DCEU. Now that Smith is officially out as Deadshot, this is his chance to make his way into the DCEU.
3. Sam Rockwell
Sam Rockwell’s versatility as an actor makes him fit the bill for whatever role. True enough, he was previously considered to play Iron Man and eventually Joker in the DCEU.
4. Common
Of all the actors on this list, Common is the one who resembles Smith the most. He was previously cast in “Green Lantern” as the titular character, but the project was canceled.
5. Mark Strong
This British actor previously played Jim Prideaux in the 2011 remake of “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.” Often cast as a cold, calculating villain, he seems to have what it takes to play the role of a deadly assassin like Deadshot.
On Thursday, Deadshot actor Will Smith confirmed that he’s not joining the cast of “Suicide Squad 2” due to scheduling conflicts. He said the decision was “made on amicable terms between both sides with no hard feelings.”
