"Star Wars 7" director J.J. Abrams recently shared a new video promoting the "Star Wars: Force for Change" campaign, which in collaboration with UNICEF, is a fundation that raises money to help children around the world that face critical issues in the areas of nutrition, water, health, and education. The "Force for Change" campaign has been incredibly successful as more than $1 million was raised within the first 24 hours of its launch, breaking the Omaze fundraising record. Meanwhile, J.J. Abrams also used the "Force for Change" platform to promote his "Star Wars 7" movie. In the latest "Force for Change" video, Abrams stands before a full-size X-Wing that will be in the new movie. The particular X-Wing that rests behind Abrams features what looks to be decades of service as the obviously battle-worn ship features fadding blue paint and panel burns. The new X-Wing wears its scars with pride.
To give the new X-Wing some context, "Star Wars 7" will allegedly take place approximately 30 years since "Return of the Jedi." Acording to Badass Digest, Two adventurers walking through the desert stumble upon a severed hand gripping a light saber. Obviously, we know this hand belongs to Luke Skywalker, but the adventurers do not learn the truth until they meet Han Solo and Chewbacca. However, Han and Chewie reveal they have not seen their old friend in 30 years. As the quest to find Luke, the missing Jedi Master, begins, nefarious forces are in the midst of building a super weapon on an ice planet. This time, not only will this weapon be capable of destroying planets, it can wipe out a solar system.
The Incom X-Wing models are portrayed as the never-say-die workhorse fighters of the Star Wars Galaxy. At first glance, the new X-Wing in its landing position is very similar in design to the Incom Z-95 Headhunter starfighter. However, the Z-95 Headhunter features four distinct wing mounted thrusters while the new X-wing seemingly possesses only a pair of large thrusters and a fixed dual wing setup. However, the telltale sign of four wingtip lasers reveals with certainty that the wings are designed to split. The two large thrusters actually split to become four semi-cylindrical thrusters. What's more, rather than split along a horizontal seam, the wings feature a curious vertical split.
What we cannot see from J.J. Abrams' "Star Wars: Force for Change" campaign video is the top section of the new X-Wing fighter. Because of this, we cannot confirm whether the new X-Wing is designed to carry an R2 droid. On behalf of all the diehard R2D2 fans out there, we sincerely hope that the astromech droids continue to have a significant presence in the Star Wars galaxy.
As far as we know, the "Star Wars 7" release date is sometime in 2015. Stay tuned as we learn more details about "Star Wars 7" in the months ahead! Check out the cool rendering of the latest "Star Wars 7" X-Wing in battle position below:
