Prepare yourselves: the reckoning is upon us. The first teaser trailer for "Star Trek: Into Darkness" stormed the Internet today with phasers drawn.
As the first taste of the sequel to J.J. Abrams' powerful 2009 reimagining of the series, "Into Darkness" has a lot to prove in short amount of time, but by the end there's little doubt we're all in for one hell of a ride.
"You think your world is safe ... it is an illusion. A comforting lie told to protect you. Enjoy these final moments of peace. For, I have returned ... to have ... my ... vengeance," someone intones in a grave, gravely rasp, presumably the as-yet unnamed villain played by actor Benedict Cumberbatch.
In a hair-raising one-minute sequence, the trailer flashes images of a futuristic metropolis under attack, mass destruction, and plenty of shocked faces like an approaching hurricane gathering strength. It's a teaser, so, there's not much narrative unity tying everything together, but there are more than enough intriguing tid bits to whet appetites until next summer. Some kind of lake of fire, a huge spacecraft emerging from the water, explosions inside a space ship, a blonde caterwauling, and distraught future people all careen by at neck-breaking speed in the trailer's last seconds.
Many had predicted Cumberbatch would play Khan Noonien Singh, the character made famous in the original "Star Trek" series by Ricardo Montalban. However, just who the film's villain actually is remains a mystery open for debate.
As the New York Daily News notes though, the final moments of the Japanese international trailer for the film, might provide tantalizing evidence to suggest the film's villain is indeed Kahn.
"12 seconds of additional footage that shows ... two hands on opposite sides of a glass divider - an obvious reference to the scene in 'Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn' in which Spock dies to save the lives of the rest of the crew, leading to much speculation about whether history will repeat itself in 'Into Darkness,'" noted the Daily News.
A few more images of destruction and a crash flash. Then the words "Into Darkness" fade in from the dark background.
"When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction," says the film's official plot synopsis.
"Star Trek: Into Darkness" will star Chris Pine (Captain Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Karl Urban (Dr. McCoy), John Cho (Sulu) and Simon Pegg (Scotty).
An extended version of the 'Star Trek Into Darkness' trailer sequel will also be shown for nine minutes before the 'The Hobbit: An Une'xpected Journey' in select IMAX theaters.
"Star Trek Into Darkness," hits theaters May 17, 2013.
