Last week, the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Boston Red Sox in Game 3 of the 2013 World Series. The 5-4 victory was awarded to the Cardinals after Allen Craig was given a home plate following a controversial call by the umpire. Middlebrooks was called for obstruction on runner Allen Craig, and even as the Red Sox chased down the throw down - eventually making what looked like a successful attempt to nail Craig at the plate - the game was over.
"It was going to be a conversation one way or another," St. Louis Manager Mike Matheny said. "We saw the tangle there. It's just a matter of how they interpreted it - and that's the rule."
St. Louis is now at a 2-1 Series lead into Game 4 tonight.
In tonight's match, Clay Buchholz is scheduled to start Game 4 for the Red Sox. Although he had an amazing start to the season, Buchholz has battled injuries the second half of the season. His early-game effectiveness will be scrutinized heavily by the Red Sox coaching staff. Meanwhile, Lance Lynn will no doubt rely on his powerful fast ball and to keep big hitters guessing. When he gets into the zone, he can smash through players, although he has a tendency to let has relies on a power fastball and sprinkles in his off-speed, hoping to keep hitters off balance. When he gets off to a solid start he can roll through innings, but if things go amiss early on, he can sometimes let mistakes get the better of him. Boston will have to regroup after what was no doubt a draining Game 3. A rebound win would even out the series: a loss could be a death blow for the team.
