Spotify is planning to launch a free and ad-supported version of their music streaming service for mobile users, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. To stream music on mobile devices right now, users have to be signed up for the Premium tier subscription that costs $9.99 a month. This service allows music lovers to listen to tunes on any device with no ads and also download music to listen when an internet connection is not available. Currently, the free version of Spotify is only available for desktop and laptop computers that is supported by ads. The WSJ report also states that the new ad-supported will come with its limitations. The Premium tiers allow paying subscribers to listen to any track on-demand while the non-paying users will only be able to play a limited number of songs on demand and will stream more like Pandora. Earlier this year Spotify launched the radio feature to compete directly with Apple's offering, iTunes Radio. Spotify is expected to announce the new service at a press event scheduled for December 11 in New York City.

Spotify recently released streaming figures that landed Macklemore & Ryan Lewis as the most streamed artist globally of 2013. The most streamed female was Rihanna, followed by Lana del Rey, Pink, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Ellie Goulding, Beyoncé, Florence and the Machine and Lady Gaga. On the male side, Macklemore was followed by Avicii, Daft Pink, Eminem, Jay-Z, Imagine Dragons, Bruno Mars, Calvin Harris, Drake and Justin Timberlake. The only female artist to appear in the Top 10 was Rihanna who came in at No. 8.
