Times Square has become the canvas of renowned Spanish painter and artist Domingo Zapata, who has embarked on one of the most ambitious projects of his life. For more than a week, the artist is painting a retrospective of his work on a 15-story vinyl canvas in One Times Square, the iconic building of the iconic crystal ball that falls to welcome the new year.
The mural wraps three 15-story walls spanning the east, west and south facades of One Times Square, the centerpiece of Times Square and one of the most visible and recognized locations in the world. With approximately 300 feet in height and covering 30,000 square feet, it will be the largest vinyl mural in New York City made by this great art, who is painting on state-of-the-art sustained scaffolding, compared to 350,000 visitors Times Square newspapers.
The installation incorporates themes and highlights of Zapata's 20-year career, such as his series: Polo, Flowers, Pandas and Flamenco, including the reception held at the Vatican when he
was invited to paint with Pope Francis. "My
painting in One Times Square is a tribute to all the issues I have worked on for 20 years," Zapata said. "For me it is an honor to be part of the story by creating Life Is a Dream, the largest mural in New York. I want to convey this message to people from all over the world who visit Times Square and who can enjoy and get to know my art."
The mural that finishes painting this weekend will remain on display until next year. After installation, the vinyl canvas will
be deconstructed and then put together smaller works that will
be donated to
Scholas
Occurrentes (an international entity promoted by Pope Francis), Elevate New York and non-profit organizations in New York City.
"We believe there is an incredible opportunity to take advantage of the visibility of Times Square for more than advertising, and the installation of Zapata is the perfect example of what is possible," said Michael Phillips
, president of Jamestown, owner of One Times Square. “By providing a platform for artists, particularly those as famous as Zapata, we can create non-commercial moments and experiences that benefit the public. This installation could be in any important gallery or museum, but instead, it
is exhibited
in a public space for the community to experience at no cost.
"
"Domingo Zapata is one of the most genuine and hardworking artists that we have been so lucky to make friends with," "We are proud to work with Domingo, Jamestown and all the sponsors to give this gift to New York!" said Evan
Richheimer, CEO of New Tradition who has the main lease for advertising sales at One Times Square and has helped coordinate this art installation with Jamestown.
Finishing this project, Zapata will travel to Spain in September to receive a street with his name in the town where his grandmother was born.
