Spanish-American artist Domingo Zapata shared his Neo-Expressionist paintings at Art Basel in Miami- an international art fair with three shows staged annually in Switzerland, Florida, and Hong Kong. This year, the artist collaborated with Grammy Award winner, songwriter and singer, Alejandro Sanz, to create three paintings that will be auctioned at Global Gift Gala, an event hosted by the actress Eva Longoria and Ricky Martin. All the proceeds of the paintings will be donated to Puerto Rico.
Starting Wednesday, December 6 to Sunday, December 10, art enthusiasts can enjoy the Art Basel 2017 edition with a huge selection of galleries from around the world.
Latin Times spoke with Zapata on this collaboration, future plans and all the activities he will be part of during Art Basel. "I'm going to throw a huge party because I'm painting the entire Delano lobby, and on Saturday night we'll close Art Basel and likewise celebrate that I've been doing the fair for 10 years," Zapata said.
"Alejandro and I made this collaboration with the intention of making an exhibition in New York in March," reveals the artist. "But since this is the gala for Puerto Rico and both he and I are trying to help as much as we can, we will auction one of the paintings we started at the gala."
To continue celebrating, on Friday, December 8 they will enjoy a cocktail in the Design District area where Zapata will also be in the company of Alejandro Sanz and Jordi Molla to present works of the three during Art Basel.
For over 20 years Zapata has built a body of work, which varies significantly in motif, though consistently explores themes of sexuality, opulence, and vitality in his signature style. In this distinctive hand, Zapata layers fantasy and reality, luring the viewer into his potent, cosmically beautiful world.
Although he is already worthy of a good holiday, Zapata continues working non-stopping and on Saturday, December 9, he will be presenting "Pandamania;" an installation in the lobby of the Mondrian Hotel where of pandas will be presented, with the intention to be a fun exhibition and also to celebrate with all the guests in a pool party like just in Miami you can enjoy.
The art of Zapata is an incorporation of mixed-media, collage and graffiti. The artist told to Latin Times that he would love to intervene artistically, photographs of his friend Sofia Vergara. "I had a great time with Sofia," says Domingo. "When we collaborate we laugh a lot and it turns out to be a very creative and fun process."
There's no doubt the future continues to promise illustrious milestones for Zapata. He is preparing a poignant, commemorative mural for the lobby of Freedom Tower in Manhattan. The piece will be unveiled as part of the building's opening ceremony and remain on permanent display.
