In 2010, the World Cup Final placed powerhouses Spain against Netherlands. Though this match was deemed to be a classic, it was coined the “anti-football final”, as 120 minutes went by until Andres Iniesta broke the 0-0 deadlock to secure Spain their first ever World Cup title. In one of the opening games to this year’s World Cup, the Dutch team has the opportunity to avenge their 2010 loss and get this years World Cup started on the right foot.
Both teams are placed in Group B along with Chile and Australia, and will get their respective campaigns started against each other on June 13 in the newly renovated Arena Fonte Nova which is located in Salvador, Brazil. The arena, which opened in 2013 holds close to 53,700 and will be sure to provide an excellent atmosphere for fans of both “La Furia Roja” and “die Oranje.”
Spain’s coach Vicente Del Bosque, who coached the team in 2010 was quoted by FIFA stating that, “We don’t have any fear. But we do have respect.” This comes as no surprise as the current titleholders have a fully stacked squad with players from top clubs all over Europe. Though the entire team is littered with talent, the key to Del Bosque’s success comes in the form of the 30-year old Barcelona talisman, Andres Iniesta. Watching him play football is like watching a masterpiece at work. He will be supported by the likes of David Silva in the midfield and Diego Costa up top. Both of whom should compliment the little midfield genius throughout their cup run. A special eye should also be placed on defenders Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique who enjoyed good campaigns at both Real Madrid and Barcelona.
The Dutch team is led by their enigmatic but brilliant coach Louis Van Gaal. Yes the same Louis Van Gaal that will take over the reigns of Manchester United once the World Cup comes to an end. The Dutch should feel confident coming into this year’s competition as their roster is seemingly filled with international superstars. A keen eye should be placed on United striker Robin Van Persie and Bayern Munich mid-fielder Arjen Robben. Arguments can be made that both players are the best at their positions compared to anyone else. Keep a close eye on these two as they can single handedly change the outcome of a game.
Despite a lackluster 2010 World Cup Final, look for this game to be much more open and entertaining. The game is set to kick off at 3:00 PM (EST) and can be seen on ESPN and Univision. The link to watch the game online can be viewed at on ESPN Go HERE.
