The 2010 World Cup Final between Spain and Holland was anything but exciting. Before Andres Iniesta sent all of Spain into complete ecstasy with his game winning goal on the 120 minute mark, this game was boring beyond all belief. It was hard to even fathom the fact that this was a World Cup game, let alone a final that almost a third of the world’s population was watching. As the opening game to Group B places the two finalists against each other once more; expect to be entertained by two of the greatest soccer countries on the planet.
Holland comes into the match winning 9 out of their last 10 matches and holds one of the best starting XI’s in the entire tournament. Spain comes into the contest off a convincing 2-0 win against El Salvador and to many across the globe, is one of the favorites to once again be lifting the World Cup trophy on July 13. Though Spain may be better at holding possession and playing through their talented midfield, the class of the Dutch team should not be overlooked.
Look for this game to be much more entertaining than the one played in Johannesburg the last time the teams faced each other. Look for Spain to control a good amount of possession as midfield players like Xavi and Iniesta are all very good at maintaining the ball in the midfield. Spain have to be very careful in possession though as the attacking prowess of the Dutch team can desperately hurt them on the counter-attack.
Holland coach Louis Van Gaal has stated that his team will play with a 5-3-2 formation, which could point to signs that the Dutch will sit back and invite possession but counter when the opportunity presents itself. Wesley Sneijder is the engine that makes this team run, look for him to target Arjen Robben and Robin Van Persie when given the chance.
There has been some concern within the soccer media that both of these teams have players that may be on the wrong side of 30 coming into the tournament. Though both teams bring with them a decent amount of veteran players, the influx of youngsters within both squads should not be overlooked. Look specifically for players like Koke, who had a great run with Atletico Madrid this year, and Feyenoord’s Daryl Jaanmat to make big contributions for both sides throughout the tournament. Players like these can learn from the ones who have come before them. Having players like Wesley Sneijder and Xabi Alonso, who have 4 World Cups between them, mentor and teach the younger generations about how they approach international game can leave a positive mark both in the near and distant future.
Though it is only the first game, this is no easy group. The enormity of this game is huge as the runner-up in group B will most likely have to face hosts Brazil in the round of 16.
My prediction: Spain controls the game, but Holland will have their chances. Game ends 1-1.
