A picnic day out turned to tragedy as six members of the same family drowned at Ramdaha Falls of Chhattisgarh in India on Sunday, Aug. 28.

According to reports, a tourist group of 15 family members were at the natural beauty spot in central India, when two sisters, 14-year-old Shraddha Singh and 22-year-old Shweta Singh, approached the waterfall to take a selfie.

However, the teen lost her footing and fell into the plunge pool where she got trapped, witnesses told local media.

Shweta soon followed and got stuck in the water as well, reports said.

Family members rushed to their aid. Their 18-year-old brother Himanshu Singh, cousin 24-year-old Rishabh Singh, his wife 22-year-old Sulekha Singh, got into the plunge pool holding hands to try and rescue the girls.

Brothers Abhay Singh, 22, and Ratnesh Singh, 26, also got in to help the sisters.

But within moments all the relatives began drowning in deep water, witnesses said.

Horrified onlookers alerted the authorities and a search was initiated with the help of divers from the State Disaster Emergency Relief Force (SDERF).

Unfortunately, only Sulekha was pulled out alive, reports said.

The bodies of three persons were recovered on Sunday evening, while three other bodies were retrieved on Monday morning, officials confirmed.

Sulekha remains in a critical condition at a local hospital where she is undergoing treatment.

The bodies were handed to their relatives after autopsy, Korea District Magistrate Kuldeep Sharma told Times of India.

Police claimed the visitors had ignored caution signboard placed at the picnic spot urging people not to bathe in the water.

Sunday's tragic incident comes less than six months after another drowning at the same spot which claimed the lives of three men from Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh.
