Katy Perry might be in a happy space now. But, it has so far been a bumpy ride with life throwing too many curve balls at her, suggested the pregnant singer, during a recent interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe ahead of the forthcoming August 28 release “Smile.” The album comes after a break of three years, that was used to invest in the singer’s inner healing, after having battled mental health issues.
“The older you get, the more real-life gets, and the harder it gets to hold onto the pain that helped you create. No longer is that pain helping you create songs,” said Perry, as per a media outlet. “It's just tormenting your mind at that point, especially in your 30s, when just life, things start to ache. Your body starts to not function. Your metabolism goes south. All things start to change in your 30s, but there's so much clarity that comes from it as well. I was getting pretty high off my own supply for a long time, and then it just didn't work after Witness,” she added.
While the “American Idol” judge has chased after chart-topping tracks and validation in the past; life’s a lot different for the 35-year-old mom to be. The chase eventually led her to the rock bottom – when the clinical depression hit, and she was prescribed medications to bounce back from normal. “I was so ashamed of it. I was like, 'I'm Katy Perry. I wrote 'Firework.' I'm on medication. This is f---ed up.'”
The show, which saw Perry drop uncomfortable truths about coming out from a rather dark phase mentally, also saw the singer voicing her optimism about life. Perry is grateful for the growth that sprouted out of all that pain she endured in the process of understanding herself better.
“I feel like I've got more dimension. I have a baby on the way. I have a fiancé. I love my nieces. I love my soon-to-be stepson. I love life,” she said, adding how she’s proud of how far she’s come from being a thirsty, desperate pop star trying to hit a number.
