Monday Jan. 5 filming for the highly anticipated 2015 "Sherlock" special kicked off. As Den of Geek's website reports the Victorian vaulted cellars of music venue Colstan Hall are providing one of the backdrops for the coming episode. Main actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were both photographed by fans wearing the same period piece costumes as seen in the promo released by BBC last November.
In the picture taken by a "Sherlock" fan Cumberbatch is seen sporting a shiny slicked-back hairstyle. The costume he's in resembles that of Jeremy Brett in the 80s TV Holmes series. Freeman was also pictured in his David Burke Watson-style brown suit and mustache. As far as characters go we know that "Misfits" actress Natasha O'Keeffe will appear in the special. She was snapped in a pic with Cumberbatch wearing a floral bridal headdress on the Bristol set.
So far, the confirmed cast includes leads Cumberbatch and Freeman and regulars Amanda Abbington as Mary Watson, Louise Brealey as Molly Hooper and Jonathan Aris as Anderson. We can expect more of the regulars to turn up as filming progresses, including the likes of Una Stubbs and Rupert Graves.
The script for the 2015 "Sherlock" special has been co-written by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, with Douglas Mackinnon ("Doctor Who," "Line Of Duty," "Jekyll") directing the episode. Production Designer Arwel Jones is back, while Suzie Lavelle ("Doctor Who," "Ripper Street") joins the team as the Director of Photography.
We've yet to uncover a plot or synopsis for the special, title as well as an air date. The reported air date is still rumored as Christmas 2015 but it has not been confirmed. While Christmas is the supposed release for the special it is worth noting that it will not be a Christmas special. Mark Gatiss told Den of Geek September that this is just a special for the series not a holiday special.
“It’s not a Christmas special. It’s a special, but we honestly have no idea when it might be on. We’re making it in January but we don’t know when it’s going to be on. Christmas would be nice. The scheduling is not up to us. I don’t think even the schedulers know [laughing]," said Gatiss.
