Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes have a lot in common. So, when rumors about the two young and uber-successful artists vying for Canada’s Prince of Pop crown began doing the rounds; fans in a way got carried away. But, it turns out, the alleged ‘beefing over’ between the pop stars is far from the truth, if not entirely bogus…
Not too long ago, Bieber and Mendes had an awkward moment when the latter was seen helping Hailey Baldwin (who’s currently Bieber’s wife) at the MET Gala in May 2018. Speculations ran amok, and a lot of insiders believed that the two were dating. Strangely enough, two months since the incident, Bieber and Baldwin announced their engagement. It is believed that Mendes texted Baldwin and wished the couple well.
The external display of mutual affection went on, as Mendes revealed how much he adored Bieber’s body of work. On being compared to the “Yummy” singer, Mendes said to a media outlet, “I love them both. They’re both really awesome people. When I first started out, everybody was like, ‘Oh, how do you feel about being compared to Justin?’ I was like, ‘What do you mean, how do I feel?’ That’s the best thing anyone could say to me. He’s the man.”
But, well, post this statement, just when folks believed that there wasn’t any bad blood between the two singers, Bieber brought in an interesting spin to the drama. In July 2018, Bieber dropped a track titled “No brainer”. And the lyrics were just a tad too unsavory and (evidently) targeted Mendes. “It ain’t that hard to choose. Him or me, be for real, baby, it’s a no-brainer,” the singer crooned. While Bieber never opened up about who the track was directed at, it was a little too obvious. Adding fuel to the fire was Mendes’s ‘like’ on one of Baldwin’s pictures. When a fan posted a screenshot of the same, Bieber maintained a calm stance and commented, “Relax their (sic) friends.”
Rumors of another feud sparked last April. And this time around, it was about how infuriated Bieber was upon the mention of Mendes as the new “Prince of Pop”, which was captioned on the cover page of “The Observer Magazine” that Mendes shot for. The “Yummy” singer immediately left a clarifying comment, writing “there is no competition and it was playful joke people relax… there are no sides we’re all just here to make dope music. I’m just competitive as is he so it was just a little playful jargon.” Mendes, of course, laughed at the comment and jokingly welcomed the challenge.
Irrespective of who the Prince of Pop is, there’s clarity on one thing—there’s no bad blood between Mendes and Bieber, and the two seem to be pretty cordial with each other. Still not convinced? Well, You should watch this space for more!
