R&B singer Sharon Jones, 57, has been diagnosed with cancer and must cancel all upcoming shows and postpone work on the group's next album.

On the official Sharon Jones website the singer and the Dap-Kings issued a statement saying their next album "Give The People What They Want" will not be released on August 6 as previously planned.

"Sharon Jones has been diagnosed with stage one bile duct cancer, which has fortunately been discovered early and has not spread," the statement read. "It is expected that the immediate proposed surgical solution will lead to a full recovery, but because of its invasive and complex nature, will necessitate a rather lengthy convalescence."

According to USA Today, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings released their first album in 2002. The group has a reputation for energetic songs bring back the classic style of soul songs from the 1960's and 1970's.

Sharon Jones has been diagnosed with bile duct cancer. This form of cancer attacks the tube that reaches from the liver to the small intestine, A.K.A the bile duct, the American Cancer Society says. According to the website the main purpose of the bile duct is to move fluid from the liver and gallbladder to the small intestine where it will aid in the digestion of food.

The American Cancer Society says that depending on the location of the cancer in the bile duct it can be categorized in one of three ways. Sharon Jones did not state which category her cancer falls into on her website but did want to let fans know what was going on.

On her website the singer wrote a message to fans saying she was "down but not out."

"Over the last few weeks I haven't felt good and I didn't know what was going on," Sharon Jones explains to fans. "We sadly had to cancel shows while I went through a series of tests and short hospital stays."

Jones goes on to inform her fans about her cancer saying, "Luckily we caught it really early and fast and the doctors say it's operable and curable."

Sharon Jones let her fans know that she would be keeping in touch with them and letting everyone know how her recovery goes.

"I'm looking forward to getting back on the road to give the people what they want," Jones said closing out her message.

Sharon Jones is one tough woman and she will not let cancer keep her down. Before she and her band became successful Jones was working her day job as a corrections officer on Riker Island in New York City.

Jones' biography on IMDB says she came to NYC as a young girl and began singing gospel music at her church. Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings have released 5 studio albums. They plan to release their sixth album following Jones' recovery.
