Patricia Maisch shouted in Senate chamber after lawmakers rejected a law for gun control. Patricia Maisch shouted "shame on you!" after the Senate voted 54-46 to defeat a bipartisan proposal to broaden background checks on Wednesday. The amendment was proposed from Senators Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Pat Toomey, R-Pa, if passed the proposal would have expanded background checks to all online and gun-show sales. However, the bill failed as it required 60 votes from the Senate for approval.
The outburst came from Patricia Maisch who took the ammunition magazine from the shooter, Jared Loughner, who shot and severely injured U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, his target, and killed six people, including Chief U.S. District Court Judge John Roll, as well as a 9-year-old girl, Christina-Taylor Green.
After yelling "shame on you!" Vice President Joe Biden called for order, and then Maisch was escorted out of the U.S. Capitol by police according to the Washington Post. Maisch spoke to reporters and explained the reasoning for her outburst, "because they are an embarrassment to this country that they don't' have any compassion or care for people who have been taken brutally from their families," she said.
Another women outraged by the failure of the gun control law was Lori Haas. Haas's daughter Emily, was shot and injured in the Virginia Tech massacre. She spoke to reporters about how upset she was with the Senate's decision, "we are sick and tired of the death in this country and these legislators stand up there and think it's a bunch of numbers. There's been 187,000 Americans killed since Virginia Tech. My daughter was shot and injured six years ago yesterday. It's a shame, it's appalling, it's disgusting," she said.
President Barack Obama also seemed disappointed in the Senate's decision; Obama said the Senate's failure to pass the bill is "shameful" except it was only the first round of the fight for gun control laws.
