Shakira is getting closer to facing trial for alleged tax fraud against the Public Treasury of Spain.
According to a resolution published Tuesday, a judge in Barcelona ordered the case to move forward to trial. But a start date has not yet been set, reported CNN. The Grammy winner failed to pay personal income and wealth tax between 2012 and 2014, alleged Spanish prosecutors.
It is currently valued in the amount of around $15.8 million. But she has denied the allegation. She even called the accusations “false” in a recent interview. She said that she paid everything "they said I owed, even before they filed a lawsuit. So as of today, I owe zero to them.”
According to Spanish authorities, she stayed in Spain for more than 183 days annually between 2011 and 2014. But the singer denied that in her new interview. Her lawyers said that her primary residence during that those years was in the Bahamas.
A spokesperson for Shakira said in a statement in July that the singer and her team "consider that this case constitutes a total violation of her rights since she has always shown impeccable behavior, as a person and taxpayer." The statement further read that she has also shown a "total willingness to resolve any disagreement from the beginning, even before the criminal process."
On personal front, Shakira and her former boyfriend Gerard Pique were seen watching their nine-year-old son play baseball, but they maintained distance from each other. The two parents showed up to watch Milan play on Saturday in Barcelona, reported The Sun.
Pique and Shakira had a bitter split this summer after being together for 12 years. The tension seemed to be in the air last weekend as they headed out to support their son. While Pique sat with his mother in one of the stands at the baseball venue, Shakira attended the game with her own mother and some friends. They sat either side of the singer.
At one point, she was also spotted sitting in the team’s dug-out. Shakira and the footballer remained several metres apart throughout the afternoon. They hardly looked at each other during the baseball game. It was not until their other son Sasha, 7, went to say goodbye to Shakira that the former couple went anywhere near each other.
According to TMZ, the icy environment gave "unresolved issues" vibes. Also, Shakira's "keep back" jacket backed that up.
