Police have named 23-year-old Brian Laundrie as a person of interest in the case of missing 22-year-old Gabby Petito. The couple had embarked on a “van-life” journey to travel across the United States while documenting the trip online. The woman’s family reported her missing days after her partner returned to Florida without her. Search for the missing woman continues.
The circumstances and details surrounding the missing woman remains murky. The couple had reportedly left for their journey in July. On Aug. 17 the woman was left at a hotel in Utah while Laundrie flew back to Florida to move their things from a storage unit to his father’s home. Utah police revealed that on Aug. 12 they had to intervene when the couple had a conflict. The police determined that there was no cause to press criminal charges.
Weeks after the incident, the woman was last spotted in Wyoming. Aug. 25 was the last time she spoke to her family. It was later revealed that on Aug. 30 Petito’ mother Nichole Schmidt received a message from her daughter’s phone. Part of the message reportedly said that there was no service in Yosemite.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Schmidt shared that she does not believe the messages were written by her daughter. She claims that the messages were not how the woman used to communicate. She suspects that the messages were meant to create a misdirect. When asked if she thinks the messages were sent by Laundrie, she said that it was a possibility.
The day after Schmidt received the last messages, Pitatos shared a playlist on Spotify, New York Post reported. The playlist contained songs of love and heartbreak.
Laundrie returned to Florida in the couple’s van on Sept. 1. On Sept. 11 Petito’s family reported her missing after they could not get a hold of her.
Since the beginning of the investigation, the police have tried to question the missing woman’s partner. Having hired a lawyer, the man refused to offer the police any information of what might have happened to Petito. The woman’s family as well as the police continue to urge Laundrie to share any information that could help locate the missing woman.
