"Scandal's" fifth season will premiere in just two weeks and we are pumped to see what will happen now that Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) and Olivia (Kerry Washington) are officially together. After kicking Cyrus (Jeff Perry) and Mellie (Bellamy Young) out of the white house, the couple were left to finally be together without any consequences.
It's been a long time coming and now that it has finally happened we can only imagine what forces are on the way to disrupt the happy pair. When the series returns to ABC Sept. 24 we will have our answers but until then check out these 12 things you should know about "Scandal" before it returns:
1. Shonda Rhimes kind of revealed the plot for the fifth season in a recent interview and stated it'll begin only a few days after the events in the fourth season finale. She stated that the fifth season will see Olivia and Fitz the only people standing in a single piece, as she said "The world had been fairly blown apart for everybody except Olivia and Fitz. Everybody else was in a fairly blown apart place ... We pick up right there in that environment and we see what happens next."
The fifth season will feature "the reconstitution” of Team OPA, as Rhimes revealed in an interview with TVLine, as she explained that the Gladiator conceit was sidelined a bit in the fourth season to instead "healing" Olivia. She noted that "a lot of times it was just Huck and Quinn gladiating by themselves. And that wasn’t the same dynamic."
2. There are a few character promotions for season five. It had previously been reported that Portia de Rossi was upgraded from recurring character to series regular. Now Shonda Rhimes is bringing back another recurring character as a regular. Cornelius Smith Jr., who plays activist Marcus Walker, will return for season five TVLine reports.
3. As for the main cast as of now we should expect the return of Kerry Washington (Olivia), Darby Stanchfield (Abby), Katie Lowes (Quinn), Guillermo Diaz (Huck), Jeff Perry (Cyrus), Tony Goldwyn (Fitz), Joshua Malina (David Rosen) and Bellamy Young (Mellie).
4. One rumor suggest Scott Foley who plays B613 operative and sometime boyfriend to Olivia, Jake Ballard would not return for season five. According to Celeb Dirty Laundry Foley will most likely not return as he and the shows star Kerry Washington have a real life ongoing feud.
"Sources say Kerry Washington's tense relationship with on-screen boyfriend Scott Foley is what got his character riddled with stab wounds on the season finale," a source reportedly told Star Magazine. "While Scott has assured fans that he will be back next season, he also has hinted that Shonda Rhimes said the end is near."
"Kerry is a very take-charge gal, but Scott is a veteran actor with his own opinions, and many of them rubbed Kerry the wrong way. Scott knows that Kerry is tight with Shonda, so he sees the writing on the wall. He wouldn't be surprised if he got killed off early this fall."
The rumor is false as Rhimes has confirmed Jake Ballard will return and Foley is shown with the rest of the "Scandal" cast in the promo video for ABC's TGIT (Thank God It's Thursday).
5. A new gladiator will join the ranks! When the fifth season was announced Rhimes also revealed that there will be a new gladiator added to the mix. Rhimes stated that this person will be someone we have seen before. Could it be a gladiator from the past like Stephen Finch (Henry Ian Cusick) or perhaps someone Liv already worked with like Josie Marcus (Lisa Kudrow)?
6. Bellamy Young teases Mellie's next move in a interview with Hollywood Life. The actress shared in a podcast about what she expects to see from Mellie in the new season, as well as her overall hopes for the tough lady.
“I can’t imagine her saying, ‘well I accept,'” Bellamy said about whether she believes Mellie will fight back in the new season. As far as the rest of Mellie’s life, Bellamy wants only the fiercest for her. “I hope ultimately that Mellie is president and Fitz is by her side and he loves her so much again and they’ve weathered that Olivia storm, and now they’re together and it’s happiness,” Bellamy said.

7. Joe Morton recently revealed in an interview with Deadline that he doesn't really know much about what will happen to his character because everything will depend on series creator.
"I haven't the faintest idea. I mean, we don't know. Shonda Rhimes doesn't let us know until we actually sit down at a table read," he said.
However, even though Morton doesn't know much about the future of his character, the actor still weighed in on whether or not he thinks Rowan will be able to get out of prison.
"On the surface, it looks like a given who Rowan/Eli is, to be in jail for extortion or for embezzlement seems like something that might be easy for him to get out of but we'll see. Who knows what will come out of the mind of Shonda Rhimes," he said.
8. The first promo trailer for season five of "Scandal" has been revealed and we have to say it is steamy! The 30-second video showcases our favorite couple Liv and Fitz.
In the new clip we hear a beautiful cover of the Etta James hit-single "At Last," while we see Olivia and Fitz standing on the balcony of the White House sharing a passionate kiss. We then see a few clips of Olivia and Fitz in the past sharing their feelings for each other and fighting that desire to be with one another. From what we can tell the couple have finally got their happy ending. But then again, this is "Scandal" and nothing ever comes that easy.
9. In a interview with TV Fanatic actress Katie Lowes discussed season five of "Scandal" as well as her character, Quinn, and Huck.
"She's in a really huge pickle," Lowes said. "It's really a conflicting emotion of do you kill your best friend/mentor/sexual lover/all the different various relationships we've been to each other [and] the man you lick every once and a while for kicks?"
Lowes went on to say, "The truth is he killed a bus load of innocent American people and chopped a lot of their heads off for fun so Huck's crossed a major line. Now Quinn has crossed lines but not that bad."
The actress assures fans that Quinn will be around to keep things up and running. "What I find so exciting about Quinn and where she's going and where you saw her last year is she's really holding down OPA," said Lowes. "Everyone is dealing with their drama and she's the one making sure the doors stay open."
10. "The Strain" star Mia Maestro has moved on from vampires to the political freakshow that is "Scandal." The actress has joined the ABC drama in a major recurring role for season five, Deadline reports. This marks Maestro’s return to ABC, where she had a heavily recurring role on another popular drama series, "Alias," as Jennifer Garner’s sister.
With most Shonda Rhimes shows, the character Maestro will play is being kept hush hush, but there is a chance that the actress will could be a new gladiator for Olivia.
11. The title of the season premiere, "Heavy is the Head" was revealed on August 8, 2015, by its director Tom Verica via his Twitter account. The episode will air Sept. 24 at 9:00 p.m. ET.
12. Jake Ballard will return and will play a major role in season five according to executive producer Shonda Rhimes. In an interview with EW Rhimes said that Jake could "destroy everything."
Rhimes didn't elaborate on how the former B613 agent will "destroy everything," but fans immediately speculate that he could turn his back on Olivia Pope and associates. If you recall in the season four finale, "You Can't Take Command," Jake told Liv that she can be witht he man she truly loves and she chose Fitz.
With Rhimes' latest statements about Foley's character we can only assume Jake has had a change of heart and will interfere with their relationship.
