The San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks are two of the biggest rivals in the National Football League. Thanks to the tremendous rise of quarterbacks Colin Kaepernick and Russell Wilson, competition between the NFC West powers escalates each time they meet, both on the field and in the stands. The Niners, led by former University of Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick, advanced to the Super Bowl last season and although they ultimately fell to Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens, NFC West supremacy -- at least for the time being -- belongs to the 49ers.
Head coach Pete Carroll and the Seahawks hope to change that tune starting this weekend at the always-raucous CenturyLink Field in Seattle, Washington. As the 'Hawks fans attempt to break the Guinness World Record for stadium crowd noise in their next contest against the Niners, quarterback Russell Wilson hopes to conquer a San Fran defense considered by many to be the best in the league. Wilson completed 25-33 passes for 320 yards and a score in last weekend's win against the Carolina Panthers, and if his Seahawks are to upend a loaded 49ers team fresh off a victory over the Green Bay Packers, the former North Carolina State and University of Wisconsin quarterback knows he'll need to perform in a big time way.
"My dad used to always tell me, 'Big-time players make big-time plays in big situations,'" Wilson said recently. "And I think that for me, I live up to that. I'm waiting for that moment. I'm relaxed in those moments. I try to be calm in the storm for all the other guys in the huddle. For the other 10 guys in the huddle, I want them to know that I'm composed, I know what I'm doing, I'm relaxed, I'm ready to go. So I think that's what kind of gives me the peace."
