For some people, working for Queen Elizabeth and other members of the royal family may be a dream come true. After all, one will be in close proximity to these dignitaries and will have access to some of the most majestic and historic palaces and mansions of the world. Here are a few positions in the royal household’s staff with their corresponding salaries.

Butler

Buckingham Palace once advertised a position for a trainee butler for a £15,000-pay per year. While this salary is low, being a royal butler is good on the resume and can be very useful when one is vying for a £100,000-a-year job as a private sector butler in the future.

System Administrator

For those who have a knack for solving system processes, the Queen once advertised a £20,000–£22,000-per-year position as a system administrator. This position is tasked with the “configuration and development of the ticketing system” for royalty tourist attractions, such as Windsor Castle, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Buckingham Palace and The Royal Mews.

Curtain Maker And Upholsterer

For those who have an eye for interior design and can make curtains and soft furnishing upholstery, Windsor Castle once advertised a post for people with such skills. The position has a £22,000-per-year compensation, but one must be ready for a busy schedule as the responsibilities include decorating around a thousand rooms. Aside from the monetary perk, however, there is that pride in having one’s creative work be put on display in one of the most famous castles in the world.

Keeper Of the Privy Purse

But for those looking for the higher pay grade, there is a position among the royal household staff that pays really high and is actually the highest paying of all the jobs. The position is called the keeper of the privy purse, who basically functions as the royal family’s treasurer and is in charge of keeping the royal household’s finances in order.

Unfortunately for those who are interested, the position is already occupied by Sir Alan Reid. In 2012, his annual salary was £180,000, which is around $237,675 at that time.

But looking from a monetary point of view, the salary level of workers in the royal family can be considered a mixed bag. True there are a few positions that offer very high compensation packages, but there are also some jobs that are on the low end of the spectrum. In fact, a recently advertised position for housekeeping assistance pays only £8.17 an hour. This even raised concerns from the Living Ware Foundation as it is £2.03 less than the £10.20 London Living Wage.
