Ukraine claims Russia unleashed chemical weapons on the city of Mariupol. On Monday, Ukrainian troops reportedly suffered respiratory failure and dizziness along with other symptoms typical of exposure to an “unknown substance”.
According to the Mirror, Pro-Russian separatist rebels said the Kremlin may highly likely use chemical weapons to take down Mariupol resistance in the last-ditch effort to break the stalemate. The UK Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss stated that Britain is working on verifying reports that Russian forces may have launched a chemical attack on Mariupol, warning how all options are now on the table should it be confirmed that chemical weapons were used.
Ukrainian MP Ivanna Klympush tweeted on Monday, "Russia 1.5hr ago used unknown substance in #Mariupol. Victims experience respiratory failure, vestib.-atactic syndrome. Most likely chem. Weapons!”
The alleged chemical attack came just hours after a pro-Russian general in Donbas appeared to be pushing the idea of using chemical weapons as he told the state media it would “smoke Ukraine moles out “from the ground".
Russia’s Ministry of Defense earlier suggested that the Kremlin could turn to the use of phosphorous bombs. Although this is not strictly categorized as a chemical weapon, the agent used in the bomb can cause fierce burning and massive injuries to both troops and civilians exposed to it.
Much of the city of Mariupol has been flattened to the ground by Russian bombs including the Mariupol Drama theater where at least 300 civilians who took shelter lost their lives in an airstrike. Ukrainian forces from the 36th marine brigade posted on social media, "Today will probably be the last battle, as the ammunition is running out. It's death for some of us, and captivity for the rest."
"The infantry was all killed and the shooting battles are now conducted by artillerymen, anti-aircraft gunners, radio operators, drivers, and cooks. Even the orchestra."
But despite the defeat, the brigade said that troops who are still able to fight and whose limbs have not been torn off have returned to the battlefield despite their injuries.
